Research

Applied, with a path to flight.

Every research program at Aethon exists to answer a question our platforms are asking. Each has a benchmark, a timeline, and a flight test at the end of it.

RES-A · Phlegon program

Propulsion

Endurance is a powertrain problem before it's an aerodynamics problem. The Phlegon program studies small-engine efficiency, hybrid-electric architectures, and thermal management for powertrains that fly all day.

  • Hybrid-electric powertrain benchmarking for the 25–200 kg class
  • Fuel-efficiency mapping across loiter profiles
  • Thermal design for long-duration, low-signature operation

RES-B · Materials

Composites & manufacture

Attritable aircraft only work if the airframe is cheap without being fragile. We study composite layups and production methods that trade gram-level optimization for order-of-magnitude cost reduction.

  • Low-cost composite processes for rapid layup
  • Additive tooling for short-run production
  • Structural margins tuned for consumable-class airframes

RES-C · Autonomy

Resilient flight

The link will fail. GPS will degrade. The question is what the aircraft does next. Our autonomy work focuses on navigation and multi-vehicle coordination that keep the mission going in denied environments.

  • Vision- and terrain-aided navigation without GNSS
  • Decentralized coordination for formation behavior
  • Graceful degradation and safe-return logic

Research partnerships.

We collaborate with universities, labs, and industry on shared problems. If your work overlaps with ours, let's compare notes.
